What is a Kansas Boater Education Card?

The Kansas Boater Education Card is proof that a boater has successfully passed the Kansas Boating Safety Test. All boat operators 12-20 years of age are required to get certified to legally operate any motorized boat or PWC within the state. 

Is the Kansas Boater Education Card the same as a Boating License?

The Kansas Boater Education Card is proof of successful completion of the Kansas state-approved boater education course. The card is commonly referred to as a “boating license”. However, unlike a license the Boater Education Card does not expire, and does not need to be renewed.

Who needs a Kansas Boater Education Card?

The Kansas Boater Education Card is required for any boat operator 12-21 years of age to legally operate any motorized boat or PWC within the state. Note that It is illegal for any child who is under 12 years of age to operate a motorized boat or PWC without supervision, even if they have obtained a Boater Education Card. 

Who is exempt from having to obtain a Kansas Boater Education Card?

  • Boat operators who are 21 years of age or older
  • Boat operators who are being directly supervised by an adult 18 years of age or older who possesses a valid Boater Education Card
  • Boat operators being directly supervised by an adult who is 21 years of age or older and is exempt from the boater education requirements

What is the fine for not having a card?

Boaters caught operating a motorized boat within the state of Kansas without a Boater Card may receive a fine of up to $500.
