What is an Arizona Boater Education Card?

The Arizona Boater Education Card is proof that a boater has successfully passed the Arizona Boating Safety Test. Although the boater education card is not required within the state of Arizona, it is highly recommended that boaters get certified to ensure they are safe on the water.

Is the Arizona Boater Education Card the same as a Boating License?

The Arizona Boater Education Card is proof of the successful completion of the Arizona state-approved boater education course. The card is commonly referred to as a “boating license” However, unlike a license, the Boater Education Card does not expire, and does not need to be renewed.

Who needs an Arizona Boater Education Card?

There is currently no mandatory boater education requirement for operators of motorized recreational boats within the state of Arizona. 

Who is exempt from having to obtain a Arizona Boater Education Card?

Since Arizona does not require mandatory boater education, there are no specific exemptions.

Since boater education is not mandatory within the state, there is no fine for not carrying the card. How long does the Arizona Boater Education Course take?

Boaters who choose to complete the Arizona Boater Education Course are required to complete a minimum of 3-hours of online study, prior to being able to access the boating safety test. Upon successful completion of the course and test, boaters will be able to print a temporary card immediately.

Is my Arizona Boater Education Card valid in other states?

Yes. The Arizona Boater Education Card is accepted in 40 states, which extend reciprocity. This means the BOATsmart! Course meets the National Standards established by NASBLA. This law applies to operators of motorized boats, but not in all states to operators of personal watercraft (PWCs). Always check the boating laws in the state you plan to visit prior to operating a boat or PWC there.
